Los Rios Colleges Awarded Major Federal Child Care Grants

Three of the Los Rios colleges – American River College, Cosumnes River College, and Sacramento City College – have been awarded federal grants to support child care and family services on campus. The multi-year grants will support a variety of campus programs at the colleges' child development centers.

The grants are part of the Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program (CCAMPIS) program from the federal Department of Education.

Here are the details for each college:

American River College

The American River College grant award is $283,000 per year for the next four years. The grant will fund the college's infant-toddler program in the following areas:

• Improvements to the indoor and outdoor environments
• Increased staff to allow for younger children – starting at 6 months of age
• Teacher training
• Early Childhood Education student training and permit advancement
• Family workshops (both enrolled families and campus community)

Cosumnes River College

The Cosumnes River College grant is $150,000 a year for the next four years and will fund the development of the college's family resource and engagement center, the Nest. This program will support families, so that:

• Families feel welcomed at our campus, persist, and are strengthened by educational and career achievement
• The economic mobility of both parent/family and the child is enhanced
• Both student parents and their children's educational outcomes will advance generationally
• Families within the college community will be supported, sustained, and strengthened in their collective pursuits and wellbeing

Sacramento City College

The Sacramento City College grant award is $224,000 and is renewable each year for five years. The grant will help fund comprehensive services for student families of children under the age of two years.

• The funded activities for the children and families will begin in Spring 2022, starting with toddler-aged children.
• Income-eligible student parents may participate at no cost to the families.
• The program will feature a parent involvement and education component, with online parent support and education through Canvas, as well as on-campus activities.
