As of June 1, 2020, the Los Rios college bookstores have transitioned to a new vendor, Follett. The following is a list of frequently asked questions regarding Follett and changes to bookstore operations.

General FAQ

What is changing with the bookstores?

The Los Rios Community College District and our four colleges are committed to the success of our students. One continuing barrier to student success is the high cost of course materials. Our instructional and student services departments, in partnership with our college bookstores, have made great strides in lowering the cost of course materials for students. This has included a combination of zero-cost Open Educational Resources (OER), low-cost digital, rental, and used course materials options. Though we are proud of our efforts so far, we know there is more that we can do. To support our continued drive to lower the cost of course materials for our students, we have entered into a partnership with Follett Higher Education Group (Follett) to manage and operate our college bookstores.

Why was Follett chosen for bookstore services?

Follett has been in the higher education industry for more than 140 years. They operate over 100 two-year and four-year college bookstores in California and over 1,200 college bookstores throughout the United States and Canada.

Follett's expansive supply chain, economies of scale, innovative technology and course materials solutions ,focus on student affordability, and experience serving California community colleges will drive increased course materials savings for students. Follett supports course materials affordability through the nation's largest textbook rental program, an extensive selection of used, digital, new and OER course materials, as well as Follett's price matching program.

To show their commitment to affordability, Follett has guaranteed, subject to a penalty payment, that student course materials savings in the first year of the partnership will be at least $1,000,000.

When does the partnership with Follett begin?

The partnership with Follett is in effect as of June 1, 2020. Due to the uncertainty caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, Follett will operate online stores to support the summer and fall needs of students and colleges.

Follett will begin operation of the physical bookstore locations as soon as Coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

Are there new bookstore websites?

Yes, the new Los Rios bookstore website – serving all four Los Rios colleges – is available as of June 1, 2020. It features a modern design and enhanced functionality. Students taking classes at more than one college will be able to purchase all course materials from one convenient online location.

Student FAQ

How can students buy course materials?

There are a number of ways for students to locate and buy course materials, including:

Bookstore Website

From the bookstore website, students can look up course materials by class or by the five-digit section number.

eServices
  1. From your eServices dashboard, click on Manage Classes.
  2. With View my Classes selected, choose the term and college you're looking for.
  3. Click on the View/Purchase My Textbooks link. This will open a custom page on the bookstore website where you can view/purchase the course materials for that class.
Website Class Schedules Search Page

Using the website's search class schedules page, find a specific class and click on the blue information icon next to the class information. In the information box, click on the See textbooks in bookstore link. This will open a custom page on the bookstore website where you can view/purchase the course materials for that class.

Where do students return rental books if the college and bookstores are closed?

The spring 2020 rental due date has been extended to the end of the week that the colleges reopen.

As soon as the colleges reopen, we will send an email reminder to students letting them know that they can return their spring 2020 rental textbooks to the bookstore(s).

While the bookstores are closed, students will not be charged late fees on their spring 2020 textbook rentals.

Where can students sell back textbooks?

Student can sell back textbooks via the new college store website. Currently, only the online option is available.

When the physical college bookstores reopen, students will\ be able to sell back books in the bookstore(s).

How do students apply for a job to work at one of the bookstores?

All bookstore positions will be posted in the Follett Career Center

How do students buy supplies and clothing?

There are a variety of supplies available for purchase on the new bookstore website. Until the physical bookstores reopen, clothing assortments will be minimal.

Can students buy technology through the online bookstores?

Yes, students can buy a variety of technology items through the online bookstore.

Will the bookstore ship to a PO box?

Yes, the bookstore will ship to a PO box.

What is the return policy?

All refunds or exchanges require a valid receipt or packing slip. Shipping and handling fees are not refundable.

Textbooks/Course Materials

Refunds are given for course materials returned before your campus-specific refund deadline*. Course materials purchased after the campus-specific deadline must be returned within seven business days of purchase for a full refund. Course Materials purchased during the last week of classes or final exams are not refundable.

Hardware and Software

Bring back unopened computer hardware and software within 14 days of purchase for a full refund. Electronic Software Download (ESD) purchases are final and non-returnable.

Gift Cards

Gift cards are non-refundable.

Other Merchandise

All other merchandise that is unopened and in original condition can be returned within 30 days of purchase. 

How long will it take for a student to receive their online order?

Shipping time depends on a student's geographical distance from the bookstore(s). Most shipments of physical materials will be received within three to seven business days in the greater Sacramento area. Expedited shipping is available for an extra cost.

What is the shipping method and will tracking information be provided?

All shipments are made via FedEx or UPS and tracking information is provided with the order confirmation email.

Will in-store and off-campus pickups be provided?

Unfortunately, no in-store or off-campus pickups will be provided until the Coronavirus restrictions are lifted and the campus store locations can reopen.

Can students rent textbooks through the bookstore?

Yes, textbook rentals are an option for most adopted materials. Students can choose to rent when they search for materials on the website. A credit or debit card is required as collateral to rent books. Learn more about the textbook rental program.

How do students use financial aid at the bookstore?

Financial aid authorized for use at the college stores (for example, EOPS textbook vouchers) are set up as a payment type on the bookstore website. Select Fin Aid/VA/Vouchers/Gift Cards-Certificates as your payment method when you check out. Your student ID number will be required to make a financial aid purchase on the website.

Can students use a previous college bookstore gift card or gift certificate at the new bookstore?

Yes, students can use gift cards and gift certificates from the previous bookstores.

When you check out on the bookstore website, select Fin Aid/VA/Vouchers/Gift Cards-Certificates as your payment method and then follow the instructions to apply your previous gift card/certificate balance.

How do students buy a gift card through Follett?

Gift cards are available for purchase through the online bookstore. When the on-campus stores reopen, gift cards will be available for purchase there as well.

Will Follett be offering free shipping to students who order summer 2020 textbooks?

Yes, students who order textbooks for summer 2020 courses will be able to take advantage of free shipping.

Faculty FAQ

How do faculty order books for their classes?

Faculty can submit all adoption information – including new adoptions or changes to existing adoptions – to Follett representative Jasmine Trice at jtrice@follett.com. As soon as Follett's online adoption tool – Discover Adopt – is available, additional information and instructions will be provided to faculty.

How do faculty order required supplies for their classes?

Required supplies should be included as part of the textbook adoption information for your classes. If required supplies have not already been submitted with your adoption, then please contact Follett representative Jasmine Trice at jtrice@follett.com with your course information and the details of the necessary supplies.

How can faculty view the textbook information for their classes?

Faculty can view the textbook information for their classes through the online bookstore textbook search.

If faculty create lab materials for their classes and would like the bookstore to sell them, then what is the process to get the lab materials printed?

Follett is coordinating the production of all course packs, syllabi, and other materials with the district. Due to Coronavirus restrictions and the inability to print materials on campus, Follett will be utilizing an outside vendor for these materials. A PDF of the material and the information about your course should be sent to Follett representative Jasmine Trice at jtrice@follett.com.

Will Open Educational Resources (OER) be available through the bookstore?

Follett supports OER adoptions through the Follett Discover tool. If print versions of OER are available, then they may be available for purchase.

Does Follett offer VitalSource and RedShelf eBook options?

Follett has a partnership with RedShelf to provision and deliver digital content.

If faculty have books that they sell through bookstore, then how do they establish an account as a vendor to ensure a purchase order is sent to them to ship books to Follett for summer?

If you have previously sold books to any Follett store, then you will already be set up as a vendor in the Follett course materials system. As long as the book information is submitted as part of your textbook adoption, there will be an order generated for the materials.

How do I verbally communicate with the textbook department at the college store?

Faculty may contact Jasmine Trice at (530) 741-6998. Please note that this number will connect you to the Follett Bookstore at Yuba College, where Jasmine is currently located.

What if faculty want to adopt an edition not listed on the Follett Discover site?

Once enabled, the Discover site does not limit what you can adopt for your courses. You can adopt any edition and the Follett team will evaluate the availability and communicate with faculty if there are issues.

Will Follett offer free shipping on summer 2020 textbooks to the students?

Yes, students who order textbooks for summer 2020 courses will be able to take advantage of free shipping.

In the past, if faculty ordered a zero-cost textbook, then the bookstore partnered with the print shop to print the books and sell them very cheaply to students who wanted a hard copy. Will this still be possible for summer, or has Follett looked into any alternatives to help our students in this regard?

Follett will work with local and/or national printers to produce print versions of zero-cost textbooks and will be working with vendors to ensure that any necessary copyright clearance occurs for all materials.

College Department FAQ

How do departments set up Follett as a vendor?

Departments will follow the standard district purchasing process to provide financial aid via the bookstore (for example, EOPS book vouchers) or make departmental purchases with Follett. Learn how to set up an account with Follett for your department or program. Review the college store information and make sure to use the appropriate store number, name, and address to add Follett as a vendor for your departmental needs.

What do departments need to provide to allow students to use financial aid at the bookstore?

After completing the standard district purchase order process, departments will provide Follett with student details, so that accounts can be established for those students. Student details include name, student ID number, and award amount.

How will libraries receive a list of adopted books?

Libraries can email Jasmine Trice at jtrice@follett.com for a summer book list. Once the bookstores open on campus, they can provide a book list to the libraries.

External Agency FAQ

How do external agencies provide financial aid for students to use at the college bookstores?

External agencies will need to complete a Credit Account Agreement with Follett. Review the college store information and make sure to use the appropriate store number, name, and address to add Follett as a vendor for your departmental needs.

What do external agencies need to provide to allow students to use the financial aid they provided at the bookstore?
